About iron replacement IV therapy
Intravenous (IV) iron replacement therapy is a fast, effective way to restore iron levels in people who cannot tolerate oral iron or who need replenishment more quickly than oral supplements can provide. Iron is essential for producing hemoglobin—the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body—and low levels can lead to fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and anemia.
How does it work?
IV iron delivers a controlled dose of iron directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. This allows for better absorption, fewer gastrointestinal side effects, and the ability to correct deficiency rapidly.
How fast does it work?
Deficiencies can often be corrected in just one or several treatments, depending on the severity of the deficiency and the specific formulation used.
Who needs it?
Common reasons for IV iron therapy include iron-deficiency anemia due to any of the following:
- chronic blood loss.
- chronic fatigue related to low iron.
- restless leg syndrome linked to low ferritin.
- pre-surgery optimization.
- cardiovascular complications related to anemia.
- medical conditions causing low iron.
- heavy menstrual bleeding.
- malabsorption conditions (such as celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease).
- post-surgical needs (such as after gastric bypass surgery).
- pregnancy.
- chronic kidney disease.
- cases where oral iron has been ineffective or poorly tolerated.
Is it safe?
Modern IV iron formulations are safe, well-tolerated, and administered under medical supervision. Modern IV iron therapy is considered very safe, thanks to advanced formulations and careful medical oversight. Today’s preparations have a much lower risk of serious reactions compared to older versions, and most patients experience only mild, temporary side effects—if any. Infusions are performed in a controlled clinical setting where trained staff monitor patients closely throughout the treatment. With proper screening and supervision, IV iron offers a reliable and well-tolerated way to restore iron levels quickly and comfortably. During the infusion, we monitor you for comfort and rare allergic reactions.
How soon will I see results?
Many people begin feeling improvements in energy and symptoms within days to weeks after treatment.

Iron replacement IV therapies
Allow 45 to 60 minutes, 100 mg.
Your first appointment includes a consultation with one of our physicians and a carefully monitored test dose of IV iron. We:
- review your medical history, current symptoms, and anemia-related concerns.
- review your most recent iron studies, including ferritin, serum iron, TIBC, and transferrin.
If you do not have recent labs, we can draw them in our clinic; see Blood Iron Panel.
Test dose infusion: Your first 100 mg dose of iron is infused very slowly under direct physician supervision to ensure safety and to monitor for rare allergic reactions. Once we confirm your tolerance, the infusion rate is gradually increased to complete the treatment.
Allow 30 minutes, 100 mg.
This visit is for patients who have already demonstrated tolerance to IV iron infusions and have already been evaluated for iron treatment by one of our physicians. This treatment includes:
- IV line placement.
- 100 mg of iron infused in 500 mL Lactated Ringer’s solution over about 30 minutes.
Optional: Additional iron may be added at $65 per 100 mg as directed by the physician. Ideal for patients undergoing continued iron repletion or routine maintenance therapy.
Allow 90 minutes, 1,000 mg, single visit.
Our high-dose session delivers a full 1,000 mg of iron in one extended visit and is ideal for people who:
- need to raise their iron levels quickly.
- have post–gastric bypass malabsorption.
- are preparing for surgery and need correction of pre-operative anemia.
- have cardiovascular complications where anemia correction is clinically beneficial.
This visit includes:
- physician consultation and review of symptoms and recent iron labs.
- a supervised 100 mg test dose infused slowly to ensure no acute reaction.
- gradual increases in infusion rate to administer the full 1,000 mg over 60 to 75 minutes.
This is the most efficient option for rapid iron repletion.
A comprehensive iron panel is drawn in the clinic and processed through our partner lab. Tests include:
- ferritin.
- serum iron.
- total iron-binding capacity.
Results are typically available within 5 days.
